15 November 2009

Kampala — THE UPDF directorate of human rights, Unicef and the Gulu Support the Children Organisation have embarked on training UPDF officers in monitoring and reporting child rights violations in armed conflict and during the return and reintegration process.

Those undergoing the training include UPDF political commissars and administrative and intelligence officers, who are expected to champion the programme, the northern-based army spokesman, Capt. Ronald Kakurungu, said.

He added that the UPDF officers were also being trained in protocols and conventions on the protection of children, international humanitarian laws, civil- military relations, communication with children and handover procedures.
