Kampala — FORTIFIED foods have drastically reduced admissions and the death rate at Murchison Bay Prison in Luzira.
Milton Tiyo, the prisons quarter master, said they started giving the inmates nutritional supplements in 2005.
He made the disclosure last week during a one-day workshop held at Royal Suites in Bugolobi, a Kampala suburb.
Prof. William Kyamuhangire, an official of the fortified food project, explained that the foodstuffs have additional nutrients like iron, zinc and vitamins A, B and C. The nutrients, he said, reduce the disease prevalence.
Dr. Elizabeth Madra of the health ministry called for the sensitisation of the public on the importance of fortified foods.
