Kampala — THE dialogue between farmers in Kibiniko village in Mbale district and Nasenyi village in Budaka has restored calm to Namatala wetland.

The wetland is the centre of a raging border dispute between the Bagwere and Bagisu farmers accusing eachother of tresspass.

Four Bagwere and two Bagisu have been hacked to death since the conflict flared up in 2007on.

Ahmad Wamimbi, the LC 1 secretary of Kibiniko village, said in an interview last month, farmers from both districts met and agreed to till their plots while waiting for a the Government report on the border demarcation.

"We agreed that we had no technical knowledge on the appropriate boundary and decided to continue tilling the wetland as we wait for the Government to redress on the matter. We realised that politicians were fanning the conflict to prove their might," Wamimbi said.

He explained that as calm returned, the farmers had started cultivatiing and had achieved economic progress.

"Initially, you would find the whole rice field slashed. Now, you come confidently knowing you are going to work," Wamimbi said.
