Uganda: URA Captures Smuggled Cigarettes

15 November 2009

Kampala — THE Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has impounded contraband cigarettes that were being smuggled into the district.

The URA northern Uganda law enforcement officer, Lt. Patrick Mwesigye, said the impounded Supermatch cigarettes were worth sh80m.

"We discovered the cigarettes in a grass-thatched hut at Tacia village in Awoba parish, Kei sub-county. They were smuggled in from Kaya through Sudan," he told The New Vision on phone on Friday.

He said the smugglers had resorted to using bicycles to smuggle in goods. He added that traditional smugglers from Arua district may have changed course after intensive operations on the Democratic Republic of Congo border.
