Pretoria — Parliament will this week hold public hearings on the political, economic and social impact of climate change.
The hearings, taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday, are aimed at developing a comprehensive picture of how climate change is impacting on communities and ecosystems in South Africa.
According to a statement, several Portfolio Committees, including Water and Environmental Affairs, Energy and Science and Technology are expected to take part in the hearing.
South Africa is among the countries that will be sending a delegation to the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Change Summit scheduled for December.
Last week, Water and Environmental Affairs Minster Buyelwa Sonjica convened a meeting in which members of the public were encouraged to make inputs on South Africa's position leading to Copenhagen.
"The public hearings are in line with Parliament's aim to enhance public participation in its processes. To this end, the Committees will hear from a range of stakeholders and individuals drawn from business, labour and civil society," reads the statement.
