Liberia: CDC, Unity Party for Run-Off

National Elections Commission NEC Chairman James Fromoyan says opposition Congress for Democracy Change (CDC) candidate Geraldine and ruling Unity Party (UP) candidate Clemenceau are qualified to contest a run-off slated for November 24.

Mr. Fromoyan announcing the official results of the bi-election at a news conference said Tuesday proceedings produced no winner, saying that none of the ten candidates in the race secured an absolute majority of 50% plus one vote as prescribed by the Liberian Constitution.

Congress for Democracy Change flag-bearer Doe-Sheriff and Unity Party candidate Urey got the highest votes cast during the election characterized by poor turnout and irregularities. Mrs. Doe-Sheriff received 33, 874 or 35.5 percent of the total 97, 306 votes cast, while Mr. Urey secured 28,329 constituting 29.7 percent of the total vote cast.

Mr. Fromoyan disclosed that Alliance for Peace and Democracy (APD) candidate Prof. Wilson K. Tarpeh got 15, 555 or 16.3 percent of the total valid votes of 95, 462 while Independent candidate Alhaji G. V. Kromah obtained 6, 729 or 7.0 percent of the votes cast. Opposition Liberty Party Dairus Dillon Sr. received 5, 418 or 5.7 percent the votes cast while Independent Candidate Grace Tee Kpaan got 2, 224 constituting 2.3 percent.

Independent Candidate Jacqueline Capehart secured 1, 244 or 1.3 percent while Free Democracy Party (FDP) candidate Jasper Fallah Ndaborlor got 1,143 amounting to 1.2 percent. Independent candidates Daniel G. Johnson and Nathaniel S. Toe received 668 votes and 278 vote of the total 97, 306 of the total votes cast respectively. According to Chairman Fromoyan 2,199 of the total 97, 306 votes were invalid while 95, 462 were valid votes.

Meanwhile the NEC has congratulated candidates that participated in the bi-election for conducting themselves maturely and responsibly. The Commission also lauded registered voters for turning out to cast their ballot in an orderly manner. In related development campaign activities for the Montserrado County Senatorial bi-election run-off has commenced.
