Kampala — UGANDA lags behind in development due to the poor performance of the Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Industry, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has said.

Otafiire is the Minister for Trade, Tourism and Industry. "The sector is important in the recovery and development of this country but it is very unfortunate that this ministry has lagged behind," he said.

Otafiire was addressing stakeholders at a sector review conference held at the Uganda Industrial Research Institute Nakawa on Friday. He said it is only industries which would turn Uganda into an industrialised state.

"For the 58 years I have been on this earth, I have never seen or heard of a country which has developed on agriculture. "Britain, the same size as Uganda, is going to the moon, but Uganda is still growing bananas. It is not that we are foolish but something has been going wrong," he said.
