Nigeria: Works Minister Threatens to Revoke Contract

Abuja — The Minister of works, Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Hassan Mohammed Lawal, has threatened to revoke the contract of the Kaduna Eastern By-pass awarded to a Turkish firm, Eksiiogullari contractors.

The minister expressed disappointment over the slow pace of work at the site. He revealed that N9 billion which is over 50 per cent of the estimate for the project had been disbursed to the contractors.

He gave a three-month ultimatum to the contractors to return to site and start work immediately, saying the present administration is committed to providing infrastructure to which construction of road's is paramount.

The minister who was received by the Kaduna State Deputy Governor. Mr. Patrik Yakowa noted that the Eastern By-pass when completed will de-congest the Western bypass adding that Kaduna is strategic to the northern states.

Yakowa further called on the minister to look into the concern and observations of the state government and repair the Maraba-Pambeguwa-Jos Road.

Lawal appealed to Nigerians to be patient and show understanding in the construction and rehabilitation of roads as these usually come with challenges which includes planning, designing, mobilization etc. He, however promised that the story will be different in 2011.
