Kano — Almost a million prospective students lose chance of getting admission into the Nigerian universities every year, as they compete for only 300, 000 vacancies for undergraduate courses in the universities.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has said. In an interview with the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), monitored in Kano yesterday, the Deputy Director, Information of the NUC, Alhaji Ibrahim Yakasai, said the deplorable state of universities accounts for this disparity. According to him, the Federal Government through the NUC is bent on solving the problem through various means including registration of more private universities. He said with the handicap of public universities, establishment of private institutions became inevitable. Yakasai, however, assured that the recent call off of the four-month old industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of universities (ASUU) is for good as, according to him, the Federal Government took its time to study the pact signed by the government and ASUU.

He said the government had already committed itself to implementing its part of the agreement, saying the salary increment approved had been effected. "The government had to read the pact carefully before assenting to it. For the salary increase, they had to secure the approval of the National Assembly for the expenditure," he said. He assured of uninterrupted academic activities as all the contentious issues between government and trade unions in the universities had been resolved.
