Kenya: Yu Unveils New Tariff

16 November 2009

Nairobi — Mobile phone service subscribers on the yu network can now call at a flat rate of Sh6 under a new a tariff.

Essar Telecom Kenya said the amua tariff has been developed in a bid to make telecom services affordable to a majority of Kenyans.

The company's chief commercial officer Kunal Ramteke said subscribers will now enjoy the round the clock flat rate on their phone calls billed per second adding this rate is applicable across all networks in Kenya.

"If you look at the typical call patterns of the average Kenyan user, the average call rate in the market is close to Sh10. This initiative will in actual fact give the consumer a saving of 40 per cent on their call rates," he said.

"At yu, we believe that the consumer, should be able to speak to anyone, at anytime with very affordable rates and hence this attractive rate across any network in Kenya that you call," said Mr Ramteke.

With the launch of amua tariff, subscribers have an option to either migrate or continue on their existing tariffs.

Essar Telecom said it will launch a nationwide campaign to popularise the new tariff.

The move is likely to trigger a price war among other mobile phone companies given that the oncoming holiday season where offers and counteroffers will be rolled out one after another.

The move is of course glorious to a normal pessimist kenyan bt nothing close to bold n pioneering. At last am reminded am still in Africa, moreso kenya, where heros can turn into villains in a twinkle of an eye. with arrival of fib-opt, i would expect a better package in their data provision, but in their website, it still stands at ksh8perMb. Yu is still our hero, but its quite a shame they r rapidly falling from grace in hearts of adventurous kenyans, the vijana. You can ask Kwena and Bonnke, my two pals who bitterly share my honest feelings.
