Citizens of one of Liberia's newest and remotest counties, River Gee have elected members of the Trustee Board of Radio Gee, the only Community Radio in the county.
The citizens elected the officials at a well attended meeting in the county's capital, Fish Town, on Tuesday November 10, 2009.
Radio Gee, based in Fish Town is the only radio station in that county, which the people heavily rely on for information.
The election of the board members of the station followed a lengthy discussion-chaired by the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association of Liberia Community radio, James Worlo-of issues affecting the growth and development of the media entity.
Various community representatives attributed the problems at the station to, among others, interference by some politicians of the county and the lack of support from community residents.
Scores of community radios are built across the country with support from international partners, and they serve as valuable sources of information in informing the people about government policies among other peace and development activities.
"These community radio stations are very important, as they are the only sources of information for the people in the rural parts of the country," Mr. Worlo told The Informer.
He said Radio Gee will even play a critical role as the 2011 elections approach. Mr. Worlo indicated that the station will educate the people on the electoral process and bring the candidates close to the people through news and other informative radio programs.
During the mass meeting, Miss Veronica Tarnynoh, Gender Coordinator of the County urged journalists of the station to apply the ethics of the journalism in the production of programs at the station.
Other citizens squarely put the problems of the station at the feet of the station's management and commended the organizers of the meeting for restructuring the board of trustees and the administration of the station.
Mr. Jackson Seeare and E. Blamo Robinson head of corporate office and media project officer, respectively of International Alert, officiated the meeting along with Mr. Worlo works at UNMIL Public Information section.
Those elected during the meeting to serve on the station's trustee board include: Madam Elizabeth Green (Women Groups representative) and Chair Person; Rev. Johnson Norings, Sr., Vice Chair Person; and Chief Pah Sayee (Traditional Council representative) - Member.
Other members of the board are Sieh Williams (Business Community representative), Commany B.W. Pah, Sr. (Youth representative), S. Taryee Toe (Educational sector representative), Eliza Bohlen (Agricultural sector representative), Comfort Doe (Civil Society Representative), and Radio Gee Station Manager (Board Secretary).
Also serving on the Radio Gee Community Radio Board are the County Administration of River Gee and UNMIL.
The Radio Gee Community radio station was set up in 2006 by International Alert, a UK-based Peace building international organization, with a 300-watt transmitter having a broadcast range of 150 kilometers.
