Nairobi — The madness that has consigned a huge swathe of territory to backwardness and under-development -- in Northern, Eastern, and parts of Rift Valley provinces - will have to be dealt with sooner or later.
But instead of seeking solutions to the perennial violence associated with cattle-rustling, the area's political leaders are busy passing the buck, accusing their colleagues of incompetence.
The question Minister Mohamed Kuti and his colleagues should ask themselves is this: What have we, in our individual and official capacities, done to foster peace in the areas we represent in Parliament?
The areas where cattle-rustling is rampant have never known any peace for the past four decades, and no Security minister has ever tamed the bloodthirsty tendencies of the inhabitants.
Indeed, all options seem to have failed. These people will not be disarmed for fear that they would be left vulnerable to their mortal foes.
Politically-inspired truces have failed, most likely sabotaged by the warlords who finance, and profit from, cattle-raids.
We must realise that the solution lies, not in the resignation of the Security minister who cannot police every inch of the Republic, but in seeking innovative solutions to the persistent menace.
The answer lies in opening up the region and giving the inhabitants alternatives to cattle-rustling as an occupation. But before this happens, people cannot continue dying like flies. Something has to give.
