Kenya: Varsity to Set Up Centre on Mau Habitat

16 November 2009

Nairobi — Egerton University intends to establish an academic centre to create awareness on conservation of Mau Forest.

The Regional Centre of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development will complement training in the Faculty of Environment and Resource Development.

The university said the venture was mooted through consultations with the National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) as a coordinating body once the centre was operational.

At the launch of the programme on Monday at Njoro Campus several people and organisations around Mau region held a meeting to brainstorm on how to attain sustainable development in the country's top water tower.

Nema director general Muusya Mwinzi, in a speech read on his behalf by Dr Kennedy Inyega Ondimu, said the effects of human activities in the Mau were being felt through severe deforestation.

He said there was a decrease in water flows in the surrounding rivers spreading all the way to Mara and Serengeti ecosystems. "We feel the effects right here as the Makalia falls in Lake Nakuru have dried up," he said. Also present was Egerton vice-chancellor James Tuitoek.
