Nigeria: NLC Denies Supporting Deregulation

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has denied withdrawing its opposition to Federal Government's planned deregulation of the downstream oil industry.

NLC's General Secretary Comrade John Odah told Daily Trust on the phone that "at no time did NLC or anybody make any statement to that effect. You should know that we have an ongoing process after inaugurating a 10 man committee to look into the presentation of Federal Government team.

"We shall be guided by the mandate of that team which is going to articulate the next position to be taken by the union. Anybody who tells you that NLC was in any meeting and in the said meeting declared support for deregulation is on his own.

"The 10 member committee set up by the Central Working Committee of the NLC will meet Wednesday through Friday as part of its mandate to come up with a position within the three weeks it was given to do so.

"You should know that the mandate of the committee is without prejudice to the position of NLC which is that government must tackle the corruption and mafia in the oil sector as well as fix the refineries.
