THE Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Idris Kutigi, Monday accused some state governors of interfering with the administration of justice in the country.
Kutigi, who made a formal complaint to President Umaru Yar'Adua yesterday, stressed that the alleged interference was responsible for the delay in the dispensation of justice.
He explained that the alleged interference by the governors was in the area of funding of the judiciary with the purpose of making judges beg the executives anytime they were short of money.
He said the conduct of the governors is in breach of Section 121 (3) of the 1999 Constitution which provides that the monies standing to the judiciary must be released to the heads of courts to make state judiciaries independent.
He spoke at the All Nigeria Judges' Conference at the Andrew Obaseki Auditorium of the National Judicial Institute, in Abuja where President Yar'Adua, who was represented by Minister of Labour, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN), hailed the judiciary for stabilising the polity by its recent pronouncements.
