Accra — The Ghana Black Stars yesterday fought from behind on two occasions to survive their Malian counterparts scare in their four-goal thriller in the last World/ Africa Cup qualifier at the Baba Yara Stadium.
The visitors subdued the home side from the word go, and their tactical superiority resulted in a free kick that opened the scoring when a Malian striker connected home with a powerful strike.
Ghana's Asamoah Gyan and Sulley Muntari struck the metal work in their attempt to pull parity.
Mathew Amoah's equalizer, a few minutes after recess, restored the Ghanaian's confidence, but that was short lived as the 'starless' Stephen Keshie team capitalized on a defensive error to restore their lead.
The introduction of Kwadjo Asamoah, Lee Addy and Agyeman Badu, who came in for Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien paid off, and in one of their raids, the stars had an infringement from which Anthony Annan connected home a John Paintsil free kick through a header to make it even.
The Stars finished tops in Group D, maintaining the top spot with 13 points, having already qualified for the World/ African Cup in South Africa and Angola respectively.
