Botswana: Khama Unveils His Grand Plan

Gaborone — President Ian Khama has unveiled his multi-faceted dream to turn Botswana from a diamond dependent economy to a producer country and a competitive service provider in Africa.

A new town will be built at Pandamatenga, specifically to turn agricultural products into finished goods. The long abandoned Maun Abattoir will be revived to can beef, while a rail network linking Botswana to Mozambique, South Africa and Namibia has been mooted.

The youth have topped Khama's agenda in his second State of the Nation Address. A rainbow of programmes have been announced to assist the youth to contribute in driving the economy of the country. Perhaps the most welcome relief is the announcement that housing schemes will be put in place for the poor, the youth and first time employees, while Botswana Housing Corporation tenants will now have the rare chance to buy their rented houses through tenant purchase scheme.

Elsewhere recreational parks and youth enterprises will be rolled out, thanks to the P180 million raised from the 30 percent alcohol levy imposed at the end of 2008. Robust measures in the area of health are deliberately targeted at growing Botswana into a centre of excellence in medical services, with more and more specialised clinics setting up at various government hospitals.

I wish President Ian Khama the best in his wonderful "Grand Plan" for his people of Botswana. It is most refreshing to read about a president putting his people first and at the forefront of progress instead of constantly reading about all the turmoil other African leaders are causing in their respective countries. I am impressed mostly by his plan to provide for the poor and the youth who are often left out in the grand scheme of things and also for recognizing the importance of great medical care which will result in longevity of his people and for diversifying to agriculture which will also stave hunger as the poor will be able to afford what is home-grown. Kudos to you Mr President.

Ian Khama has WONDERFUL VISIONS for Botswana's economy but FACT IS THAT HIS COUNTRY IS STILL SELLING DIAMONDS IN ORDER TO PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE.

ONCE BOTSWANA IS MANUFACTURING SO MUCH FOOD STUFF TO BE

    ABLE TO FEEDS ITS CITIZENS,

then we could speak of an economy, which is independent of diamonds exports.

CYPRUS e.g. is EVEN a smaller country than Botswana but ALL

foods is produced on the island and EVEN is exported to other EU countries.

Khama visited SINGAPORE...did he learn how they achived their success?
