Selebi-Phikwe — Botswana Defence Force (BDF) bands have introduced classical music to give their audience a chance to experience different music genre.
Speaking to Mmegi in an interview, Major Philip Modise said they are now using a mass band unlike before when bands were playing differently. He observed that when they played classical music in Selebi-Phikwe it was not well received in contrast with Francistown where the audience understood it. He explained that it was an indication that residents of this town expected them to start the show with high-tempo music.
"We intend to continue educating people on this type of music as time goes on and we will keep on playing it. We are showing people the massive talent that we have in the BDF. Some of the classics that we played included Battle of hymn of the Republic, Minuet for clarinet and Military band by W.A Mozart. We also played a disco classic of Kool and the Gang called Celebration," he said.
Despite starting the concert late, the BDF gave the Phikweans a great display that was expected from them with performance of well-known songs. Modise explained that they have also changed the way they used to perform over the years, indicating that they have mellowed as performers. He said there are some people who have been giving them positive feedback after their performances.
Modise added that this was his first concert in charge and it was a big challenge though he has been a conductor for seven years.
Meanwhile, Second Infantry Brigade Commander, Brigadier Letsogile Motsumi said this was the 19th presentation of the BDF bands in concert style. He said the BDF has been undertaking various outreach projects, which include the construction of houses, libraries and day care centres.
"Through the spirit of self-reliance, the BDF has shown its dedication to serve its people, not only through its mandate of defending this country as defence force but has gone an extra mile in caring and assisting disadvantaged members of the community. BDF band is a key role player in our charity work," he said.
Motsumi narrated that the BDF band held its debut performance in 1991 at the Village Health club. He mentioned that the proceeds from concerts go a long way in improving the lives of many disadvantaged. He added that the BDF has donated P80, 000 to some charity organisations - the Masiela Trust Fund, Mochudi Resource Centre for the blind, SOS Village-Tlokweng and the Sir Ketumile Trust Foundation with each organisation getting P20, 000. He explained that these were proceeds made during the 2008 presentation. On the night of performance in Selebi-Phikwe, BDF donated P10, 000 to BOCAIP.
