Enugu — CONTRACTORS handling the rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port-Harcourt Expressway and the Enugu - Onitsha Expressway have been seriously reprimanded by the Senate Committee on Works for failing to perform, six months after the contracts were awarded.
The Committee after an inspection tour of the two roads, expressed disappointment at the slow pace of work being carried out by the two contractors, Consolidated Construction Company (CCC) handling Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway and Niger Construction (Nigercat) awarded the rehabilitation of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
Contracts for the two roads were awarded by the Federal Ministry of Works to the two firms in May this year for the sum of N8.9 billion and N7.2 billion, respectively and the projects which are expected to be completed in 24 months, includes total reconstruction of one lane, patching of the failed portions of the second lane and construction of drainages in some areas.
The contractors confirmed to the Senators, that they had been duly mobilized by the government, having received about N2 billion each in July this year, but the Senate Committee was shocked to discover that nothing meaningful had been done on the projects, as the two roads have remained impassable and have become death traps to motorists. Representatives of the firms, however, blamed the rains for the slow pace of work.
Chairman of the Committee, Senator Julius Ucha told reporters after inspecting the two projects, that the Committee was dissatisfied by the performance of the contractors, adding that from their findings, it was clear that the firms lacked the capacity to handle the road projects.
