Abuja — The much talked about 240 units Lugbe housing estate extension located in Lugbe area of the FCT was formally commissioned yesterday by the Minister of State for Works, Housing and Urban Development Mrs. Grace Ekpiwhre.

The 240-units, 3-bedroom bungalows that are meant for medium income earners are extension of similar ones in Lugbe, A suburb of the FCT.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held at the estate site in Lugbe, Mrs. Ekpiwhre said that the country is grappled with a mind-boggling housing deficit which has been estimated at about 16 million, adding that the number of people requiring housing accommodation in the urban centres and rural areas daily outpace the rate of production of houses.

The Minister noted that housing is one of the indices by which a nation development can be measured, adding that the days of massive wholly funded housing projects that "do nothing other than provide job for the boys and easy money for the corrupt minded will not return at least in the life span of the present administration."

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Architect Terver Gemade said that with the estate commissioning, it has reduced the national housing deficit by 240 units.

The FHA boss noted that the estate was designed to create the best ambience of comfort and decency, adding that the FHA has provided an independent water supply station comprising two boreholes and water treatment plant, 175,000 litres surface tank, 80,000 litres overhead plant on 8m stanchion which has enough capacity to provide drinking water to World Health Organisation standard and 22KVA generator set to make the estate a unique one.
