Nigeria: Amodu Should Remain As Eagles Coach - Toro

Abuja — Coach Amodu has guided the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but most football fans still believe he lacks the technical ability to lead the team to the mundial and should be replaced with a more competent expatriate coach.

However, former NFA Secretary General, Alhaji Sani Ahmed Toro believes such action will certainly back fire.Instead, he is urging Nigerians to give the Edo-born football tactician a chance to take the Super Eagles to Angola and South Africa 2010.

Speaking to Trustsports yesterday, the former member of the House of Representatives said Amodu may not be the ideal coach for the senior national team but replacing him now will not do the team's ambition any good as he said there is no time for such experiment.

He maintained that the coach should be allowed to take Eagles to Angola and from there build a formidable team that will represent the country in the 2010 World Cup.

Toro said that instead of thinking about dropping Amodu, Nigerians should support the coach and see what he will achieve with the available players.

"I do not support calls for the sack of Amodu. It is not the solution to the problems of the team. He may not be the best but let's give him a chance. Let him take the team to Angola and begin the building of a formidable team for South Africa 2010 there," he said.

He also carpeted calls for the total overhauling of the team saying that there is not time for such activity.

Toro insisted that even the present members of the team can do well in South Africa and should not be discarded simply because the public wants new players.

"The players we have now are still relevant and should not be thrown away simply because they have been on the scene for a long time. What is needed is for the coach to make the right selection. If he does that, there will be no need to disband the team and then start from the scratch," he added.
