Nigeria: NGO to Educate Children On Electoral Process

Abuja — The Children and Youth Democratic Electoral Model (CYDEM), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), says it has placed the necessary machinery on ground to educate children and youths on the basic tenets of democracy and the electoral process.

The CYDEM Project Initiator, Mrs Temitola Odetola, who made the revelation recently, explained that the program is geared towards changing the negative stereotype that democracy and good governance is synonymous to bribery, corruption, rigging, injustice and violence.

Mrs Odetola added further that since the inception of CYDEM in 2006, elections have been conducted in several schools to inculcate good democratic virtues and develop good leadership skills in young people in order to enable them begin to choose their school prefects through a model electoral process.

She also explained that the program will soon train some youths in a workshop, adding that four trainees will be selected from each state of the federation to empower them on leadership and self employment skills.

She however appealed to the Federal Ministry of Education to include the CYDEM program into school curriculums in Nigeria, stressing that if supported; the program will provide jobs for many Nigerians.
