Nigeria: YFON Not Yar'Adua's Campaign Organisation, Says Nwite

The new political group, Yar'adua for New Nigeria (YFON) is not a campaign organisation for President Uamru Yar'adua's re-election in 2011, Senior Special Assistant to the President on political matters Mr Polycarp Nwite has said.

The presidential aide, who said he only happens to be a member of YFON, also denied that the organisation is under the supervision of his office, stressing that it is a voluntary organisation that has chosen to showcase the good works of the president and encourage the achievement of the seven point agenda.

"I can't stop people from speculating, but Yar'adua for New Nigeria is an organisation is not a campaign organisation for President Umaru Yar'adua. It is a community of Nigerians who believe in Mr President and what he is doing. It is not a question of big men, but taking the message of what Mr President is doing down to the grassroots, promoting the seven point agenda and getting Nigerians to key into it and support the rule of law, internal democracy as well as the peace in Niger Delta," he added.

On his involvement with the group, Nwite said: "That I am working for the president does not mean that I will give up my freedom of association. I am a member, not a founder and I am not the co-ordinator. It is not under the supervision of my office. It is not a creation of government."

The group which is widely reported as a campaign organisation for the president came on the scene powerfully on Monday with the inauguration of a Board of Trustees and coordinators for the 36 states of the federation and the FCT. The membership cuts across party lines.

The next meeting of the group has been slated for Tuesday next week in Abuja during which strategies for the expansion of its activities will be discussed.

The list of state coordinators is contained in an advertorial signed by National Secretary of the group Dr. Aminu Idris in today's edition of Daily Trust today.
