Nigeria: Old Boys Renovate School With Over N186 Million

Gombe — The sum of N186million was spent in the renovation and provision of classroom furniture for Government Science Secondary School, Gombe by its Old Boys Association.

According to the caretaker committee chairman of the Old Boys Association and permanent secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Trasnport, Alkali Bello Muhammad Abdu Kalshingi, it has carried out total renovation of Galadima House through Diamond Bank plc at a cost of N50 million

Speaking during a meeting of the association in Gombe recently, the care taker committee chairman stated that grand patrons of the association made up of Alhaji Yahaya Ahmad, Alhaji Lamido Ahmad, Alhaji Yunusa Yakubu and a host of others renovated four blocks of classrooms at a cost of N25 million.

Other renovation works carried out by this association include abandoned staff room which includes modern teacher's tables and chairs done through Alhaji Yahaya Ahmad and another by Senator Haruna Garba all at a total cost of N4.7 million.

It also tapped pipe borne water for the school and provided classroom furniture in the renovated classrooms at the total cost of N3.3 million and a hostel is to be constructed for the school at a cost of N65 million.

The Old Boys stated that the case of insecurity in the school would soon become a thing of the past as arrangements have reached advanced stage to provide a fence for the school. This would fortify security in the school and allow students enjoy their academic activities freely and without fear.

It was further disclosed that agreement has been reached with Guarantee Trust Bank and has taken up the responsibility of constructing a fence as well as renovation of the administrative block of the school at the cost of N37 million.

The Chairman hinted that construction and supply of 42 twin desks by the 1973 set of the association would cost N250, 000 and that most of the donors for this project are retired civil servants who refused to be named.

The school authority was challenged to have adequate maintenance culture in the school so that those renovated classrooms, hostel and furniture in the classes could be used in the next 20 years and above.

Students of the school were also charged to ensure judicious utilization of these facilities and equipments as they were equally reminded that if somebody who graduated 25 years ago would look back and provide these facilities, they must exercise maximum care of them.
