Nigeria: Legislator Advises Govt On Deregulation

Kano — A house of Representatives member representing Sumaila Federal Consiteuncy, Kano State, Alhaji Kawu Abdurrahman Sumaila, has warned the federal government against quick deregulation of the oil sector without conducting a referendum to know the people's view on the issue.

He said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government's approach to national issues is some how myopic that is why today the are saying they will deregulate the down stream sector whether people like it or not," he said.

He warned that going ahead to carry out the deregulation without the consent of the citizenry is like the nation is operating a military dictatorship, which doesn't in every given situation care about the populace views on the policies making that affect the nation and its people, '.that is why I said that ideally the government should conduct referendum before going ahead with the issue at stake'.

'Please in the name of God conduct referendum on this deregulation and tell Nigerians the benefit or otherwise there in, so that people will have a say in what ever affect their lives, but you can not say that your decision to go ahead with the deregulation is final I think doing so is more of dictatorship then democratic means of approach', Kawu reminded.

He continue, 'the Nigerians populace are apprehensive of the whole things they are so much afraid that their lives would further be pauperized and poverty will take over the land once more, they at some extent don't even know what is this deregulations means, by all these, a responsive government need to clear the air on the issue before going ahead to do it', the Reps member advised.

However, he admitted that the laxity of the Nigerians to elect people of proven integrity is responsible of what is happening now, warning that unless in the forth coming elections Nigerians wakeup from their slumber and do the right things of voting the oppositions massively in they house of representatives and the Senate who will defend their needs they will continue to wallow in destitutions and uncertainty in the hands of the imperial PDP.

Said he, 'vote massively for the opposition in the national legislative chambers who will be ready to protect your interest so that you will begin to enjoy the tremendous wealth's in your land, but for now the oppositions have less voice to bring a change a desirable change needed, because we a less popular than the PDP members and they can take every decision they so whish with or without us', Kawu said.

He supported President Yar'Adau for collecting loan from foreign nations to finance the power project in the country, explaining that the government mission on the restoring the nation legacy on energy is highly commendable and they are duty bound to have enough fund to execute the projects.

Kawu, hinted that the President had since collected the loan but why it was been brought to the fore, was because he sent it to the house as supplementary budget, to be included in the money to be spent on the energy expansion of the nation.
