Banjul and Serrekunda East are both rushing to complete their nawettan tournaments ahead of 2009 Muhammed Yahya Jammeh Zonal Cup competition, while Bakau may have to wait until after the eight-team tournament before the winners of its league final are known.
Bakau
Double finalists Ron Mango will take on Vidar FC in the Bakau knock-out final on Thursday, November 19, at the Bakau mini-stadium.
The mid-week final came after fiercely competed semi-final clashes, which saw Vidar down their neighbours Bantankoto in a post match penalties to set up an enticing final with Ron Mango, who earlier beat Milan FC 1-0 in their semi-final tie. However, with less than one week to the kick-off of the zonal competition, the Bakau Sports Committee is contemplating on suspending the league final between Ron Mango and Unique FM until after the zonal tournament.
Serrekunda East
Serrekunda East nawettan league finalists Rangers and Ball Cogne will return to action on Friday, November 20, for a rescheduled clash after the first game ended in a goalless draw on Sunday. The two teams battled it out at the communityÂ's playing ground in the weekend with many expecting Rangers [the defending champions] to carry the day but it was never easy with the Serekunda outfit with Ball Cogne also keen on salvaging their season after surrendering the knock-out title to Leeds United on Saturday. Rangers had four players for them on the pitch on Sunday who had played at different World Cups for the Gambia but still couldnÂ't get a way past the Ball Cogne defence in an evenly contested battle.
Alagie Amadou Ngum alias 'Alagie Basse' played at the Peru 2005 and Canada 2007 U-17 and U-20 World Cups respectively, Furmus Mendy known to many as 'Kambeh' has also participated at Canada with Omar Mbye or O-Boy also featuring for the Peru 2005 side and Buba Jallow alias Â'MelesÂ' was part of the Gambian team that performed dismally at Nigeria 2009.
It is a rule at the Serekunda East Sports Development Organization [SESDO] that, Â'the final shall be rescheduled if there was no winner at the end of regulation time in the first game. But when the second game also ends in the same manner, the teams will be separated by penalty kicksÂ'.
So the two sides will return to the Serekunda East Mini-Stadium on Friday for the rescheduled game but if they were not separated at the end of regulation time, they will be involved in penalty kicks. BanjulMarcus FC were crowned as champions of Banjul nawettan league on Saturday after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Revelation FC in a fiercely competed match played at the KG5 mini-stadium.
As winners of the Sport House sponsored tournament, Marcus went home with a giant trophy and D25, 000 richer, while Revelation consoled themselves with a cash prize of D15, 000. Football fans in the capital city will return to KG5 ground on Saturday when Digi Dambi take on Miami FC in the Corr Enterprise sponsored knock-out final. The Saturday final comes barely one day before Banjul start their assault on the annual zonal cup with a clash against Serrekunda East.
