Abuja — Following the success of amnesty programme in the Niger Delta region, a firm, Dag Group Germany/United Kingdom, said it has concluded arrangement to partner with the Federal Government with a view to investing $30 billion on human and infrastructural development in the region.
The firm said the current effort was part of its determination to ensure monumental infrastructural development was recorded in the region within the shortest possible time.
Representative of the firm, Mr. Jason Nworah, disclosed this at a press briefing to unveil the activities of the forthcoming two-day Niger Delta Youths Post-Amnesty Interactive forum organised by the International Centre for Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development (CENPAD).
The forum is slated to hold on November 26-27 at Le Meriden Hotel, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Nworah, who explained that the development programme would be executed under the Private Public Partnership (PPP) scheme, stressed further that the region, having been neglected for a very long time, needed multi-dimensional development plans.
He said the company has an understanding with the World Bank to get $30 billion from the $600 billion it earmarked for the development of African, explaining further that there was concrete negotiation with the World Bank team to source the funds.
Nworah, who noted that the programme was a joint effort between the federal government and the firm, revealed that the government would provide the bond before it could access the funds expected to be paid back within long period of time through collection of tolls from roads and bills from hospital and other essential services.
He said the challenge of infrastructure in the Niger Delta should not be seen as government problems alone, pointing out the private sector has a very vital role to play in developing the region.
Earlier, Forum Co-ordinator, International Centre for Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development (CENPAD), Onuoha Oliver, while explaining the significant of the forum, reminded stakeholders in the Niger Delta to ensure that the relative peace being experienced at present was sustained.
He said: "This peaceful atmosphere needs to be sustained and consolidated through constant dialogue and interaction between all stakeholders and youth elements in the region.
"Government's alienation and neglect of the youths in policy making and implementation is the genesis of militancy in the Niger Delta.
"Thus, this forum will gather all the renounced militants in the Niger Delta and other youth elements to hear them out, know exactly what they want and how all stakeholders with cooperation of these youths will work together for a new Niger Delta.
The forum, he said, would also bring the international community, donor agencies, the private sector and the civil society groups together to seek areas of partnership in the development of post-amnesty Niger Delta.
He said at the end of the forum, a body to be named Niger Delta Youths Development Initiative (NDYDI), which will be made up of all stakeholders involved in the development of Niger Delta would emerge.
