Kampala — UGANDA has received sh17.8b from donors to support efforts geared at deepening democracy ahead of the 2011 elections.
The money is part of sh36.5b promised by the donors before the 2011 elections.
The funds are to be shared among the Electoral Commission, Parliament, Uganda Human Rights Commission and several civil society and media organisations.
Nicolas de Torrenté, the programme manager, Deepening Democracy Programme (DDP), yesterday said the funds are meant to support the holding of free and fair elections.
The Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, represented the Government at the signing ceremony held in Kampala yesterday.
Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom contributed the funds.
"We appreciate the support that the DDP is providing to key Ugandan institutions to move democracy forward," Nsibambi said.
The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, attended the discussion on democracy.
