Uganda: Local Coffee Growers Get Business Tips

Kampala — COFFEE producers have been urged to improve on the quality of coffee in order to attract more local consumers. The board chairman of the East African Fine Coffee Association, Leslie Omari, said farmers, producers and brewers should improve the standard of their products so as to promote home consumption.

He was addressing a press conference in his office on Wednesday.

"Whereas Ethiopians consume 50% of their coffee, Ugandans take 1% to 2% of their coffee and the rest is exported," Omari noted. He also said farmers needed to be sensitised on how to improve the quality of their coffee so that it can fetch a higher price.

The East African Fine Coffee Association, in conjunction with the World Bank through USAID, has embarked on improving the quality of coffee in East Africa.
