Lagos — The Lagos State House of Assembly on has moved a motion condemning the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) -led Federal Government's decision to deregulate the Nigerian oil sector.
The House also called on the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, to enforce compliance with the current pump price for petrol by marketers in the state.
This motion was raised under Matters of Urgent Public Importance by Sanai Agunbiade.
According to him, long queues have returned to filling stations across the state because owners of filling stations have refused to sell, thereby giving room for exploitation of Lagosians by touts.
He futher added that the primary reason for this crisis was the attempt by the Federal Government to deregulate the downstream of the petroleum industry, stressing that marketers are hoarding with the hope of making more profits. Agunbiade noted that "in the light of the salah and christmas festivals that are around the corner, more fire out breaks must be expected because some people will begin to hoard petrol in unsafe places and the police will use this as an opportunity to exploit those who purchase fuel in jerry cans".
Meanwhile, the impeached Deputy Speaker, Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, exchanged words with a female colleague shortly after the budget presentation by GovernorBabatunde Fashola.
It all started when the members were taking group photographs with the state Deputy Governor, Adebisi Sosan and Adegeye took her leave when Tejuoso wanted to join the group for the photo shot.
Afterwards, some members including the lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I, Mudasiru Obasa and the Chief Whip, Rasak Balogun, tried to mediate between the duo who had been at logger heads after the removal of Tejuoso as the Deputy Speaker.
As this was going on, Tejuoso threw caution to the wind and insulted Adegeye by referring to her as "omo alata" meaning pepper hawker, suggesting that Adegeye is not fit to be a member of the House.
She continued saying in Yoruba language "ma na e, ma fi ye wipe Mushin ni mo ti wa", meaning "I will beat you and prove to you that I am from Mushin area of the state".
In retaliation, Adegeye referred to Tejuoso as a prostitute singing thus "asewo no be work, na management". The two female lawmakers nearly exchanged blows, but it took the intervention of their male colleagues who were present to witness the altercation.
In an effort to prevent the scenario from being reported, the chief whip ordered the security agents to chase reporters out of the chamber, claiming that the business of the day had been concluded.
It would be recalled that Tejuoso was removed from office as the Deputy Speaker on Monday, August 17, 2009, through a letter signed by majority of the members due to what was alleged to be high-handedness, violation of House Rules amongst other allegations.
After her removal, it took Tejuoso some weeks to return to the House. When she eventually returned late October, she took a seat beside Adegeye. It however, surprised observers of events that Adegeye relocated her seat to avoid getting close to Tejuoso and she is now occupying a seat beside another member.
