Nigeria: Edo Assembly to Probe Oshiomhole's One Year in Office

Abuja — The Edo House of Assembly has initiated plans to probe the activities of Governor Adams Oshiomhole's administration in the last one year.

At the plenary session of the House on Tuesday, the Speaker, Alhaji Zakawanu Garuba, directed all the commissioners to forward briefs on their ministries' activities to the House in two weeks' time.

He said that the commissioners would then appear before the lawmakers to present the briefs, in line with a timetable that would be drawn up for that purpose.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Assembly's action was sequel to the just-concluded celebration of Oshiomhole's first year in office.

However, the Speaker said that the House took the measure to enable it to assess the level of performance of the 2009 budget and make projections for the 2010 budget.

Garuba said that the briefs should contain the amount released to the various ministries for their recurrent and capital expenditure, while reflecting the level of budget performance.

The Speaker specifically directed the Ministry of Finance to present a brief that would contain specific funds released to the ministries and the total government earnings.

Meanwhile, the House has inaugurated six ad-hoc committees to verify claims by local government chairmen on executed projects. One of the committees is expected to visit three local government councils.

The council chairmen recently appeared before the House to brief the lawmakers about their activities between December 2007 and September 2009. (NAN)
