Onitsha — FORMER Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on Domestic Matters, Mr. Andy Uba who last week lost his bid to return to Anambra Government House, Awka after Governor Peter Obi's tenure may contest the February 6, 2010 election.
A source close to Uba's camp told Daily Champion that the former 17-day governor of Anambra State told his supporters to prepare for the 2010 governorship election immediately after he lost his case at the Appeal Court last Friday in Enugu.
Supporters of Uba on Wednesday held a meeting at Awka, Anambra State capital where Uba was represented by Chief Bright Nebedum, the chairman of his PDP faction.
Nebedum was quoted as telling their supporters that the struggle was not yet over, stating that the Appeal Court Judgment which did not favour them was just one phase of the struggle, while the plot to draft Uba into the governorship election, was on. He did not however disclose if Uba would contest under PDP or otherwise.
Uba who was sworn in on May 29, 2007 as governor, but was removed following Obi's petition to Supreme Court that his tenure had not expired, had written to the National Executive of the PDP to pick him as the governorship candidate of the party for 2010 election even when he had a pending case at the Court of Appeal but the party ignored him.
But our source said that considering all the options, Uba believes that he still has brighter chances to win the 2010 governorship election more than other candidates and therefore has decided to plunge into the race.
He said Uba still has strong followership among Anambra PDP based on the structure he had built coupled with the fact that he has more contacts with important personalities in the country than other candidates.
Consequently, his supporters were told to go, prepare and wait for the next directive in the next few weeks, when Uba would finally declare for the race.
But Daily Champion gathered that Uba's supporters are demanding for payment for their support during the court cases before the take-off of the campaign, if not they may withdraw their support for other parties especially the PDP candidate, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.
