Nigeria: Over 200 Golfers for CBN Tourney

Abuja — No fewer that 200 amateur golfers would take part in the 3rd edition of the CBN Governor's Golf Tournament scheduled to hold at the prestigious IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.

Briefing the media as a prelude to the championship, Secretary to the tournament and Head, Governor's Office, CBN Adeoye Ogunlana revealed the event which comes up from November 21-22, 2009 will have CBN staff golfers and other invited players competing for honours.

He said modalities have been put in place to ensure that this year's event will be an improvement from that of last year.

Ogunlana said trophies and prizes are to be won in different categories including individual event of men in different handicap categories of 1-9 Gross; 10-18 Gross; 19-28 Gross; as well as ladies in the handicap categories of 1-18 Gross; 19-30 Gross; Veterans and Auxiliary prizes etc.

Also there will be prizes and trophies for the Governor's guests and the staff of the CBN whose inclusion has been described as having raised the stake as many of them now are interested in the game of golf.

The championship which is a closed one is now an annual event which the apex bank said is part of its effort to the development of sports in the country.

"We have been involved in the development of sports in the country including sponsoring the annual All Financial Institutions Football Competition where notable players like Nwankwo Kanu and Austin Okocha once played, we have the CBN Senior Tennis Open Championship and the CBN Junior Open Tennis Tournament, among others" Ogunlana concluded.
