Uganda: Rains to Continue Up to February 2010

Kampala — THE current rains have exceeded above normal amounts in most parts of the country and this is likely to increase in late November and early December.

According to a weather report released by Stephen Magezi, the commissioner for meteorology, the rains are expected to continue into early February.

"Most parts of the country are expected to receive enhanced rainfall (normal to above normal rains) during the month of November and early December as the ongoing El-Nino reaches its peak in November/early December," the report read.

El-Nino refers to an abnormal weather phenomenon characterised by heavy rains and floods.

Meteorologists said this year's El-Nino is expected to be mild compared to the one that hit eastern African a decade ago. "However, in some places, localised impacts of a severe nature cannot be ruled out," said the report.

So far, Kyenjojo has received the highest amount of rainfall, about 240mm. Its average has been 160mm.

Although most parts of the country have received above normal rains, Karamoja is still starved of water. However, the region is also expected to receive more rains later this year and early next year, stated the report.
