The Coca-Cola and FIFA World Cup Trophy arrived in Tanzania yesterday where it was received by President Jakaya Kikwete in the capital, Dar es Salaam.
Speaking after unveiling and receiving the trophy at the National Stadium yesterday, President Kikwete said the arrival of the trophy was a historic moment, which heralded great things to come in the promotion and development of sports in the country.
"Winning the World Cup trophy is every footballer's dream and its arrival in Tanzania is an opportunity to reconnect with one's soccer ambitions and to appreciate that dreams can come true," he said.
The president urged young upcoming football stars and the national team, Taifa Stars, to dream big so that Tanzania can take its rightful place as a great football nation.
Speaking during the official launch of the trophy tour at the National Stadium, President Kikwete, however, Tanzania will be just a country to watch the trophy visit if the sport's main players do not sort out several issues hindering the development of the sport at both the national and regional levels.
The trophy landed at Mwalimu Nyerere International Airport at 4:22 pm and rushed to the National Stadium for the official reception.
"It will take us over thousands years for Tanzania to play in the world cup finals if we don't change our modus operandi" he warned.
He mentioned four crucial things that Tanzania must done effectively to push the soccer development to the desired level.
He said the stakeholders feeling that Brazilian coach Marcio Maximo is here to turn players into golden boys should be rejected.
"His job is to develop talents and combine them into effective national side. He is not here tom teach a play how to play as many have been thinking," he said.
Second problem has been the leaders of the clubs and national team. Kikwete said most of them use soccer for personal gains as evidenced how keen they have been on the gate collections.
Adding further, Kikwete said warned the governing body TFF to change tactics in running soccer. He said soccer fans see TFF as the organ made to punish players and haul gate collections.
"Slapping a three-month ban to a player doesn't seem to develop him, we have to change the tactics and find better system of maintaining discipline to them," he said.
Coaches have also been a problem in the country according to the president, he said good coaches are visionary and their good training largely centre on developing talent, combining talents into winning teams that at the help produce formidable national team.
"Don't expect ill trained player to perform well for the national team. Maximo can only help trained player tactically when he is in the national team.
Kikwete said he was annoyed to see soccer being played well verbally through both print and electronic media.
However, the President hailed Fifa and Coco-Cola for bringing the Trophy to Tanzania.
"This has helped create World Cup feeling in the country, may be it would motivate the Tanzania for better strategies for a place in the future World Cup finals.
The most effective of all, according to Kikwete is the Copa Coca-Cola Under-17 tournaments from the grassroots levels to the national and international levels.
"Tanzania received the best of it this year and last year. Our boys claimed the world trophy in Brazil and this year they clinched bronze medal in the finals held in South Africa. It is highly commendable job from Fifa and the sponsor Coca-Cola," he said.
Hopefully, Kikwete said the coming of the trophy has truly helped the ultra-modern stadium which the country campaigns to host training camp for the teams heading for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.
