Gambia: GPU Trains Journalists On Secure Online Communication

Banjul — A four-day training for 15 journalists; including editors and reporters drawn from different media institutions in the country will end today at the Gambia Press UnionÂ's head office in Bakau.

The training, organised by The Gambia Press Union (GPU), and funded by the United States embassy in Banjul, aims to introduce methods, strategies and tools to pass Internet filters, including software tools protected pathway,. It also intends to provide a venue for sharing of experiences and challenges in implementing computer security and secure online communications among journalists, provide a more in depth training on computer and communications security by focusing only on select number of tools (application) and making sure that the participants get enough hands on time with the tools.

These four-day session equipped participants with necessary inputs for journalists to be able to determine the right security measures and applications for their individual, organizational and network requirements. It has also accorded them to prepare to have an in depth knowledge and adequate hands on time on a select number of security applications and how these can be use in different scenarios.

A rough proposal would be made today for collaboration work focusing on enhancing digital privacy and security for journalists who will be submitted to the Gambia Press Union for careful consideration and eventual implementation. During the course of the four-day session, participants were opportune to sharing of skills, presentation, discussion, group work and group presentation.
