Gambia: ADG Celebrates World Child Abuse Day

Banjul — Africa for Democracy and Good Governance (ADG), recently embarked on a weeklong celebration of worldÂ's campaign for the prevention of child abuse and violence against children.

The theme of the celebration is: Â'The role of parents and adultsÂ'. The programme on the prevention of child abuse and violence against children, created in year 2000, is today one of the largest grassroots initiatives to create a culture of prevention. Close to 100 partnership organisations including ADG, last year carried out many activities and events around various abuse situations.

This yearÂ's celebration will be commemorated with series of programmes, which include drama, and quiz comptition for school children at the premises of ADG whilst Serrekunda Primary School grounds will be the venue for the football match. Speaking at the opening of the week long celebration, Mr. Edwind Nebolisa Nwakaeme, director of programmes, said the celebration is meant to create awareness to help children know their rights.

He also described the series of programmes held and organised for the children as important and advised them to take the programme seriously. Nwakaeme also said this will help the school children to know where to lodge their complaints when their rights are being violated.
