Ghana: Voters Urged to Cast Ballots for Indigenes

George Kyei Frimpong

20 November 2009

One of the people contesting to for the Krowor constituency chairmanship of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Adjetey-Adjei, has urged the delegates whose votes will determine the next chairman, to choose an indigene of the area.

He claims that anytime the position goes to a person who was not an indigene of the area, the party tends to lose the seat to their opponents, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Adjetey, who is into the transport business, made this assertion after filing his nomination.

When elected to become the constituency chairman of the NPP, he promises to snatch the parliamentary seat from the ruling NDC.

He recalled how a similar incident affected the chances of the party in 1992, when they voted for a man who was not a Ga.

Then in 1996, when the chairmanship was given to a loyal Ga-Adangme, he said the party won the seat, stressing that in 2004, when they had a loyal Ga Chairman, they again won.

Though they had a Ga chairman in 2008, he noted that they could not win the seat, because he was not loyal to the party. "So loyalty plays a very important role in the constituency, all those who know the history know this, this is why the NPP must be very careful in selecting our chairman," he indicated, laying emphasis on the fact that, "you could have all the materials, but without a good strategy, you can't win. You must not just choose a Ga, but one that is loyal."

That notwithstanding, Mr. Adjetey noted that it also goes to change the perception that the NPP is an Akan party.

The aspirant says his trump card is the depth of experience he has gathered from working for the party, both in government, and at the national level. "I believe my contribution in the party is something one cannot question. My loyalty to the party no one can question that, and I believe under my chairmanship, all these experiences would come to bear," he stressed.

Asked why he could not help his party win the seat during the last election, Adjetey responded that at the time he was an operative of the National Security, hence could not do active politics, saying, "as a national security personnel, you don't have to meddle in politics, so I played my neutral role as a security personnel, and I have resigned to get involved in politics in my constituency."

Asked how he was going to combine his business and the constituency responsibilities, he said as the chief executive of his company, he would delegate his powers to his subordinates to run the business.
