Botswana: Struggling Satmos Call for Support

First Division North side, Satmos has appealed for support in its bid to bounce back to the Premier League.

The club rose to fame under the late Sam Sono but has been languishing in the lower division for three years. Despite assembling a balanced side, Satmos had a slow start to the season though it is picking up steam. Club spokesperson, Mpenzeni Sambandawe said the slow start was an eye opener for them.

"The club chairman, China Mading had to stand up and find the root cause of the poor performance. We have now assembled a relatively good squad that is delivering good results.

When compared pound to pound with other First Division club's we are the best and the only team that can beat us is Satmos itself," he said.

Sambandawe appealed for corporate and individual support to keep the club going. Satmos was privatised two years ago under the directorship of Mading. Sambandawe called on companies to finance the club. He said the support of Selebi-Phikwe residents is crucial in the club's quest to return to the Premier League.

"People must come and support Satmos when it is playing. They must know that this is their team and it can only progress with their help," Sambandawe said. He said the team is on track as evidenced by its recent revival. The Satmos' official blamed lack of concentration for defeat in some games.

He is elated that the burden of scoring goals is now spread unlike before when System Mubi formerly with Extension Gunners was the main marksman.

Satmos has recruited seasoned players in Morambiwa Ndlovu, Joseph Maposa and Tevin Kgage all from Nico United. Sambandawe said the three have had a positive influence on other players. Satmos is seventh in the 12-team league and might find the going tough like last season. Sambandawe admitted that they undermined competition in the First Division thinking it was going to be a walk in the park but things turned differently.

He decried the lack of sponsorship for the league, which worsens the club's financial position.

Satmos travel to Mahalapye this weekend for a tricky tie against log leaders, Mahalapye Hotspurs.

"This will not be an easy game because it is normally difficult to play there. We need a referee who will rise to the occasion. In most of the games played in Mahalapye, they use home referees and they normally do not make fair decisions. We pray to have a fair game," he said.
