Diski dance, a sequence of moves based on soccer tricks, is the official World Cup dance - and the city is out to set a world record for the most people doing it at the same time at the launch of the Cape Town Summer Festival this weekend.

The name "diski" is the slang word for soccer in Xhosa.

On Friday, two diski dance instructors, Amanda Martins and Wendy Thoane, will demonstrate the moves at the festival's launch which takes place at the Kenilworth Racecourse from 3pm.

Visitors can catch local fusion band Coda and diski dancers in action. There will also be a five-a-side corporate soccer challenge. The proceeds will go to the Read and Write literacy programme.

The festival, organised by publishing and marketing company RanniComm SA and endorsed by Cape Town Tourism, aims to promote all the city's entertainment and activities during summer through the website www.capetownsummer.co.za

Nicole Moody from Cape Town Tourism said the dance was "fitting" for the first African World Cup.

"We are a place that's proud and talented and this dance is an expression of ourselves. We can move and we are proud of it. We have the dance, the vuvuzelas, the huge sunglasses and we are going to make this a very colourful World Cup," she said.
