Zimbabwe: Mktanjo for Super Sunday

Harare — ZIFA Referees Committee chairman Gladmore Muzambi has lashed out at the Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters Association's call for the appointment of foreign officials to handle tomorrow's CBZ Premiership Super Sunday showdown between Gunners and Dynamos at Rufaro.

Muzambi yesterday hit back at calls by ZNSSA leader Eddie "Mboma" Nyatanga that his committee should have considered flying in foreign officials to handle the high profile game whose outcome could decide the domestic championship.

A win for Gunners will hand them their first championship while a draw or a win for Dynamos will mean that the title will be decided on the final weekend of the season.

Muzambi, in announcing that seasoned Bulawayo referee Thabani Mkantjo will handle the Gunners against Dynamos showdown, said his committee had faith in the local referees and would not dump them for such crunch games like tomorrow's match. The ZRC boss argued that all the Premiership matches were equally important and noted that a number of local officials, including top referee Kenny Marange, had been handling tougher Fifa and Caf assignments.

The referees' boss said while he agreed there was need for Fair Play to prevail at all matches, he did not believe that such Fair Play could only be guaranteed by foreign match officials. "We respect the Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters Association. We will respect them more if they concentrated on their mandate and leave other organisations to deal with their core business," said Muzambi.

"We have confidence in our match officials and they have done well since day one of the season.

"As the referees committee we took cognisance that two experienced sides are playing and we have chosen an experienced panel of referees."

Mkantjo might have had an indifferent season last year, with the 43-year-old match official being caught on the wrong end of some crucial decisions - notably in the BancABC Sup8r final between CAPS United and Lengthens and in the Premiership clash between Highlanders and Dynamos at Barbourfields. But Mkantjo has had a better season this term and it also came as no surprise when he was the only referee on the Fifa panel to have passed a high-level Fifa course that included a rigours fitness test in Bulawayo in August. His assistants in tomorrow's match -- Zindove and Chafa -- have also done well this season since deciding to specialise more on running the line while the fourth official in the epic clash, Ruzive Ruzive has shown so much promise in his career with some firm performances.

It has also been a similar case with the consistent Tiwone Kacheche, Mlindeli Ndebele, Jacob Kuuya and the female duo of Pamela Chiwaya and Stella Ruvinga.

Njube Sundowns eased their relegation worries with a stunning 2-1 win over Shhoting Stars in a CBZ Premiership tie at Rufaro yesterday.
