Uganda: Court Orders Pastoralists to Leave Bulisa

Kampala — PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has said the immigrant herdsmen in Bulisa district in Bunyoro sub-region have agreed to be relocated.

The President revealed this at a meeting with cultural leaders at Masindi Hotel in Masindi town on Wednesday.

Museveni explained that the move follows a recent High Court ruling that the herdsmen had to leave the district. He said the Government has been negotiating with the herdsmen through their leader Grace Bwororoza to ensure a peaceful relocation.

Last year, the President had urged the pastoralists to leave the district, but they obtained a High Court injunction which stayed their eviction.

During the meeting, the President also pledged to increase the agricultural grants advanced to kingdoms in the next financial year.

He added kingdoms would start receiving royalties from their natural resources when the regional tier system is established in the next fiscal year.

About installing Prince John Barigye as the king of Ankole, the President said this would happen if the district councils in the region wish so as it been done in Buruli and Bunyala chiefdoms.

"District councils must pass a resolution to show that people want the institution as the district councils of Nakasongola and Kayunga have done."

In their memorandum, the cultural leaders asked the Government to establish a resettlement policy of the displaced, nomads and landless groups.
