Kenya: Women Applaud Draft Law

Nairobi — Women leaders have lauded the draft constitution saying it recognises women's rights.

"The draft constitution covers the spirit of gender equality as a human right issue which most human rights organisations and women themselves have been fighting for over the years," said Mrs Joyce Majiwa, a former Fida chairperson.

Metropolitan Assistant minister, Elizabeth Ongoro who is also the Kasarani MP said many women who have found it difficult to go to parliament will get a chance to be elected if the draft law is adopted.

Maternal health

The draft law also proposes to have at least 74 women MPs and 16 women senate members among others.

The event brought together women professionals from Nyanza province who came to recognise efforts by Mrs Ida Odinga, wife to the Prime Minister on girl child education and programmes on maternal health and safe motherhood.

The leaders also came up with strategies on how to support such programmes to make them continuous for future generations.

Also present was Lands Minister James Orengo.
