National leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday cautioned President Umaru Musa Yar'adua's Senior Special Assistant on Political Matters, Chief Polycarp Nwite against kick-starting an early re-election campaign for the president.

Nwite was reported to have established 'Yar'Adua for New Nigeria', a group aimed at creating a major support base for the second term agenda of Mr President.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali, who said the party was not aware of any campaign group, urged the initiators of such groups not to distract President Yar'adua with undue politicking but focus on how to assist him to deliver on his current mandate.

Alkali said: "Our attention has been drawn to the emergence of a group coordinated by Senator Polycarp Nwite ostensibly set up to campaign for the re-election of President Yar'adua in 2011.

"Recent reports in the media have it that this group which parades itself as the President's official Campaign Organization for the 2011 Presidential elections has appointed State coordinators and Trustees.

"The PDP, after a thorough appraisal of the situation wishes to categorically state that it is unaware of any group appointed or selected to serve as campaign coordinators for Mr President for the purpose of the 2011 presidential elections.

"The party therefore wishes to caution individuals and groups purportedly working on behalf of the President for the 2011 elections to stand down their activities for the time being and instead find ways of supporting the President in his efforts at transforming Nigeria into a leading member of emerging world democracies," he added.
