Nigeria: PHCN - Restates Opposition to Board Appointments

Electricity workers in the country have restated their opposition to a planned action by the Federal Government to inaugurate seperate boards for the successor companies in Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

The workers under the aegis of National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) said the mvoe was contrary to a signed tripartite agreement between Federal Ministry of Power, Power Holding Company of Nigeria and the two-in-house unions.

A statement signed by Comrades Mansur M. Musa (President NUEE) Bede 1 Opara President SSAEAC), Joe Ajaero (Gen Secretary) (NUEE) and Timothy Akintola (Gen. Secretary, SSAEAC said "We reiterate that this will not add any value to serive delviery in the industry but will amount to economic waste.

"This resuscitated move is therefore unacceptable to us. It is rather a move to provoke the workers to react to enable the Power Ministry and their masters manufacture an alibi for non realization of the 6000 megawatts target.

"We therefore resovle to resist any subterraneous move to sacrifice the interest of Nigerians at the alter of politics. Huge debt in form of monetization arrears, cash in lieu of hotel accomodation, drivers' efficiency bonus souvenir, long service awards, among others, are still unpaid yet they are planning to lavish our hard-earned fund to settle poltiical cronies." The statement added.

The unions directed their memebrs nationwide to disallow the so-called board members from entrering any PHCN location should govenrment go ahead to inaugurate the Boards.
