Nigeria: High Commission Staff Engage in Communal Work

The British High Commissioner, Bob Dewar yesterday at the Old Karu Orphanage Home declared the commission's intention to assist Nigerians, especially the less privileged and vulnerable ones.

Dewar stated this during the 'Away Day' exercise of the commission, which saw top officials planting trees and painting the children's play ground.

He said the exercise has been on for the past three years and is a kind of social responsibility from the commission to Nigerians.

"We choose the children's home because they are more accessible to us than other vulnerable people in the society," the High Commissioner disclosed.

He said the commission intends to make life bearable and worth living for the children of the home by mobilizing them and making their environment conducive through planting of trees at their playground as well as refurbishing of their dilapidated equipment.

Also speaking, the Press Officer of the commission, Jonathan Beckam, said the commission has a large number of social responsibility projects to embark upon, especially in the area of education as suggested in the Millennium Development Goals.

Earlier Speaking, the commission's Operation Manager, Jason Ivory, said the programme is designed in such a way that every staff of the commission is made to contribute in one way or the other from it.

"As you can see, all the refurbishing are done by the commission's staff because we want to develop them to be able to do something that others can benefit from," Jason added.

Some of the staff of the commission who spoke to our reporter said they enjoyed being part of the programme, saying it helps them contribute to the development of less privileged persons.

City News learnt that the British High Commission's development programme is geared towards helping Nigerians to achieve a better life as contained in the Millennium Development Goals.
