Nigeria: NOC Eligibility - Momah Clears Air on Ndanusa

21 November 2009

Former President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, Chuka Momoh has come out to douse the controversy over the eligibility of Sports Minister/Chairman, National Sports Commission, NSC, Engineer Sani Ndanusa to contest as president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC).

Momoh, who incidentally was former president of the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT), told Sunday Vanguard sports that he had to speak "in order to put the records straight over Ndanusa's election as Vice President of CAT because I conducted the election in Pretoria, South Africa in 2003."

He said that he was invited as life patron of CAT to conduct the election with Nicholas Ayeboa from Togo who was GM of CAT at the time, stressing that as Zonal president of CAT, Ndanusa was automatically a Vice President of CAT.

Momah said that at the election, Zimbabwe's Thingoka was elected president of CAT, stressing that he was therefore saddened at what the NOC election was turning into, adding that he had to come out to speak to clear his conscience as someone who conducted the election where Ndanusa was elected.

"It saddens me what this things are turning into. Let's have some sanity, let the truth be told, we're talking about due process. The (NOC) election is not a do or die thing. When it starts tilting to one direction, I get dismayed," Momah said on Friday.

The Executive Committee of the NOC, which most members are also candidates for the election, Wednesday, disqualified Ndanusa, claiming he had not met the mandatory four years condition to be eligible for election as president.
