Nigeria: TUC Tasks FG On Human Capital Development, Employment Generation

Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has renewed appeal to the Federal Government to address inadequate human capital development, unemployment and corruption in the national economy.

The Congress also urged relevant agencies of governemnt to strengthen and extend the new social security impetus in the health and pension system to the informal sector as part of efforts to achieve Decent work agenda.

Rising from its two-day annual Industrial Relations workshop held in Asaba Delta state capital recently, participants charged government and employers of Labour to show strong commitment to collaborative Labour Policies capable of achieving adherence to International Labour Standards as it affects employment relations in the country.

A communique issued at the end of the workshop said effort to sanitize the banking sector should be sustained stressing that such efforts should also be driven towards better regulation and revamping the real sector and effective service delivery.

It charged governemnt to come up with appropriate stimulus package which would encourage the development of environemntally friendly small scale industries and sustainable agricultural practices.

The workshop also recommended that govenrment at all levels should put in place necessary legislation to curtail the exploitation of Nigerian workers by foreign investors who fail to ensure decent work country programme in respect of fair wages and hours of work as well as removal of casualisation.

"There is urgent need for government to establish Employment Information Centres at the three-tiers of government as well as provide Labour Market Information Services as is the practice in other countries" the ommunique said.

The participants further requested the federal government to direct all employers of labour in the country to set aside certain percentage of their annual budget for training and development of workers so as to enable them make meaningful contributions towards national development.

It frowned at the massive relocation of companies from Nigeria to other neighboring countries as a result of poor infrastructural facilities, which leads to job losses.

The workshop therefore called on the federal government to urgently address the poor state of the nation's infrastructure and put in place measures that are capable of attracting new companies and investors.

In conclusion, the workshop urged the Federal government to address the recommendations backed with a strong political will to achieve the Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP) as stipulated by the International Labour Organisations (ILO) of which Nigeria is a signatory.

The workshop had as theme, "The Meltdown and the Decent work Agenda; Critical Analysis and Strategy for Industiral Peace, Enterprise Growth and National Development.

Decent work sums up the aspriations of people on their working lives. it involves opportunities for work that is productive and delviers a fair income security in the work that is productive in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration, freedom for people to express their concerns, organize and participate in the decisions that affect their lvies and equality of opportunity and treatment for all women and men.
