Uganda: Step Up Aids Fight, Donors Tell Govt

Donors are demanding that the government checks the increasing HIV/Aids infections, which are expected to hit 200,000 by the end of 2009 if they are to release more funds.

According to the manager of the Uganda Aids Control Programme in the Ministry of Health, Dr Zainabu Akol, the escalating infection rate is worrying donors.

The US government, through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, this year funded 90 per cent of HIV/Aids activities. Others include the World Health Organisation, UNICEF, and European Union, among others.

"Donors are now saying if you want our money give us less infections. This is unfair comment. Thanks to President Museveni who has given us Shs120 billion. They also demand that the local private sector make a contribution," Ms Akol said.

She revealed this while presiding over the handover ceremony of food to HIV/Aids patients at Alive Medical Service donated by MP Uganda worth Shs16 million in Namuwongo on Friday. Dr Akol said the donation would help more than 50 people get free food that is essential in HIV/Aids treatment.

She said the escalating infection rate is due to mostly men having multiple sex partners and appealed to those infected with the virus not to spread it and continue accessing health services.
