Benin City — Dare devil robbers yesterday shot dead three police men, in a bank robbery at Ibillo, Akoko Edo Local Government Council of the State.
The robbers who numbered about eight-men were said to have been armed with various sorts of weapons, stormed the new generation bank at about 5:30am with a Toyota Camry and opened fire while trying to force the vaults open.
One of the policemen around who tried to resist the robbers whom LEADERSHIP gathered came with sophisticated weapons, was shot dead immediatly. The other two policemen were said to have met their death when the police went for reinforcement.
An eye witness told LEADERSHIPWEEKEND that "as they were coming, they did not know that the robbers were driving past them and the robbers opened fire on them. Two of the police men died at the spot while two others sustained bullet injuries".
LEADERSHIP however learnt that the robbers abandoned their vehicles and fled when they discovered that they were being over powered by the policemen. Two of the robbers was said to have sustained serious gun shot injuries but his colleagues escaped with them.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Peter Ogboi said the Command learnt of a robbery at Ibillo but was yet to get details of what actually transpired. He added however that "we heard that two of the robbers were fatally injured and our men also recovered the vehicle they used for the operation".
